So Circle of Dead Children can't make it to Maryland Death Fest this year due to their drummer not being able to make it. So they've been replaced by Crucifist! They're from Rochester, New York and play a mix of thrashy-old school-blackened-metal with some of the coolest vocals I've heard in a while. I feel like the crypt keeper or some zombie ghost is doing the vocals. Very different stuff here that will appease fans of thrash and old school death metal and black metal. As a result of being lazy, here's 3 albums from 3 different bands performing at this year's Maryland Death Fest. The Chasm, Eyehategod, and Gride. Let's make this fast... The Chasm are from Mexico City and play what I would call br00tal progressive death metal. Eyehategod are from New Orleans and play a heavy version of doom. Some might call it sludge, but the singer and band don't really care for that term and with a band named Eyehategod, you better just take their word for it. Gride are from the Czech Republic and play grind in the vein of blast beat absurdness... plus the Czech vocals add to the greatness. Also, no song titles on these records, you'll see them when you download them. I don't feel like doing all the weird symbols and apostrophes and shit for the Gride song titles. Ghastly City Sleep

Ghastly City Sleep features members of Pageninetynine (pg. 99), Red Sparowes, Mannequin, and Crestfallen. They however, don't really play the type of music that those bands play. Actually Ghastly City Sleep plays an epic dream like atmospheric alt. rock. In a bit it reminds me of bands like Kent, Radiohead and Sigor Ros mixed together... some serious shoe-gaze action. Anyways, it's awesome in my opinion... definitely different than the usual postings here. Here's their self-titled debut on Robotic Empire as well as their new self-released album, "Moondrifts". The song, "Seven (33 leagues)" will make you cry. Enjoy!

Wolves In The Throne Room

Olympia, Washington? Bio-dynamic agriculture? Eco-spiritual? Eco-anarchism? Purifying and transformative black metal? As you can tell, Wolves In The Throne Room aren't you average Black Metal band. They definitely have created something truly unique and use elements of Black Metal with elements of Doom, Dark Ambient, Folk, and Crust. Their songs are usually no shorter than ten minutes and their albums only have 4 or less songs on them. However, this band truly creates something totally dark and depressive that is accustomed to Black Metal. So here's some more Black Metal... this time from Germany. These guys have quite the background, supposedly back in the day (under a different name) they killed some kid in a shack by strangling him with an extension chord. Holy shit! You can read more about that here. So I dunno how the lineup changed but some of them are out now and have re-recorded older songs and compiled them with some new on this record. The vocals range from clean to black metal shrieks and it's half German half English. They kind of remind me of Thyrfing but without the keyboards and not as fast... So enjoy this unique record and please don't cry about this band having killed someone... I don't care, they still rock. Vince Neil killed someone and people think he rocks even though he's out of shape and Tommy Lee has Hepatitis C. Enjoy!

Before we get into things, let there be something said on behalf of Poonangular... we don't really care what the music is about sometimes and this next band may be national socialists black metal (or nazi metal)... but it doesn't necessarily reflect us as a blog. We feel that music can be about anything, our like of it has to deal with it's actual sound and believe that if it's good it's good and if it's bad it's bad. People that listen to rap music aren't drug dealers... mainly because a majority of rap fans are white suburban kids.... but you get our point. Agalloch

With the epic failure of the last post as well as the newly released "Best of" put out by these guys, I bring you Agalloch! Agalloch play avant-garde progressive folk post black metal doom and that's just as stupid as it sounds. However, it sounds awesome regardless of whatever nifty name you give it. They definitely have talent and it has substantially increased with each record. They've only had 3 official full lengths and a ton of splits, demos, and ep's. Out of all the albums I'd have to say that The Mantle and Ashes Against The Grain are my favorite... but I'd say I listen to Ashes Against The Grain a whole lot more. So you be the judge because I'm posting both epic albums. Now this isn't your typical black metal.... they aren't Immortal or Darkthrone. They play a more instrumental based type of prog-rock with black metal vocals (at times) as well as clean vocals. The music itself will give you a feeling of cold frostbitten despair right off buck. I'm serious, listen to "Limbs" off of Ashes Against The Grain and within the first 30 seconds a chill runs down your spine... and believe it or not, this band is from Oregon.

So this isn't really my type of music, but whatever. Someone asked me to post it, so I did. They play doomy prog rock of some sorts with middle easter influences and their getups are almost as funny as black metal bands. So enjoy it? Maybe? Who knows? They're from Israel so take a big guess as to what they talk about. I posted a picture of these clowns, enjoy.

I listened to this at work today and with the female vocals, gay guy singing, and crunchy doom vocals that belong on a death metal CD I can honestly say I didn't enjoy it, but I can see why some do. They definitely have music talent, but I dunno. I just don't dig it.
