Black Sleep of Kali

Black Sleep of Kali hail from Denver, Colorado. They play Stoner Doom Sludge Metal in the vein of such acts like Torche, High On Fire, Baroness, and Mastodon. I know that every "heavy" band that comes out today gets those sort of comparisons. However, Black Sleep of Kali bring a breath of fresh air to the genre. "Our Slow Decay" brings the catchy style of Torche with the riffs of High On Fire. Some songs even remind me of the Foo Fighters on steroids (torche has received the same comparison, i know) That's probably the best way to describe it without getting too generic. Basically, if you like any of the bands mentioned above, you'll most likely enjoy this record. Also, if you're tired of this genre, this will be your one exception. It's definitely worth a listen and trust me fruit loop, you won't be disappointed. Then when you're done, stop by their myspace and purchase their record (using the above links). Enjoy!

Another awesome screamy hardcore indie band I was into back in good ol' 2002 (i was only 17). This was probably one of my favorite releases. This band does a little bit of everything. I'd go as far as to call it an indie/grindcore hybrid with scremo and hardcore tendencies. They broke up in the same year as this release and even did splits with Neil Perry, Barstow, and The Assistant. Enjoy!

Scaremaker

So Billy Nocera, creator and owner of Razorback Records decides to join his wife, Vanessa Nocera in creating their own band... with help from Elektrokutioner, drummer from Decrepitaph. This is a fresh take on old school death metal done the old school way. A majority of the song writing, including lyrics are done by Vanessa as she shred's the guitar as well as bass and even some backing vocals on a few tracks. Billy takes care of the main vocal duties. The couple that shreds together stays together! So yeah, awesome stuff like always from Razorback. Nachtmystium - Black Meddle

So when I first came across Nachtmystium, it was when they released their, "Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. 1" album. From reviews a lot of people enjoyed their psychedelic take on black metal, but after a few listens it was quickly shoved to the back and forgotten about. They never came to my town on tour, so they didn't come up and even when they did it was usually shot down with negative comments. Then their new album, "Addicts: Black Meddle Pt. 2" dropped and out of curiosity I gave it a listen and to my surprise this album is fucking awesome. They have definitely gone more psychedelic on this release and it vaguely reminds me of one of my favorite black metal bands, Oranssi Pazuzu. The black metal on this record has definitely become more abrasive and yet somewhat a breath of fresh air in the black metal community. This album is definitely avant-garde and psychedelic  in nature, but still black as fuck... So I've included both parts of Black Meddle in this post because after a re-listen of Part 1, I've come to love that album as well. The 3 part epic at the end of it is amazing and the song, "No Funeral" on "Addicts: Black Meddle Pt. 2" is fucking insane. It's definitely worth a listen, even if you've already written off Nachtmystium. Enjoy!

Let's start off with a more shoegazey/ambient black metal band from France. This is a three song EP that completely took me by surprise. I can't really compare this band to any other black metal bands, if you even want to call them that. This is really good stuff. The CD just emits a bleak and pessimistic atmosphere. The last track on the CD is the chick in the band singing, and while I generally have a rule of chicks in metal and not listening to it (close minded about this, so fuck off) she provides a perfect balance to the screaming with her voice. She sings clean, so it's cool. The track reminds me of U2 a bit, if U2 was metal.

Far sound like the Deftones... well, the Deftones sound like Far because that's where the Deftones supposedly got their sound from. However, I do believe that the Deftones took their sound and ran with it, making a new sound that's completely their own and eventually had way more commercial success... either way, the bands did come together for a track that can be found on the B-Sides & Rarities album the Deftones put out. Re-Traced Kid A?

So here's the new Cynic in the form of an ep, this album contains 4 re-worked songs and 1 new song. It definitely isn't what you are use to hearing and I guess Cynic are known for that considering their jump from death metal vocals to robot singing voice after a decade and a half absence from the metal world. I personally loved Traced In Air and feel it was a much needed breath of fresh air in the world of metal. Regardless of whether or not you liked the vocal change, you have to admit they're excellent musicians that ready stellar songs. So yeah, this album reminds me of Radiohead (kid a era) doing Cynic covers. I guess that's hard to understand, but the songs are lo-fi, folky version of their predecessors. The new song is pretty awesome too and thus making this a worthy download even if the previous description isn't your cup of tea. I still somewhat enjoy it and I guess it's because I'm a faggot. Hopefully they'll come out with a full length as good as "Traced In Air" soon. Enjoy!

Ronnie James Dio lost his battle against stomach cancer and passed away earlier this morning. As a well respected member of the metal community, there is no doubt he will be missed. So Circle of Dead Children can't make it to Maryland Death Fest this year due to their drummer not being able to make it. So they've been replaced by Crucifist! They're from Rochester, New York and play a mix of thrashy-old school-blackened-metal with some of the coolest vocals I've heard in a while. I feel like the crypt keeper or some zombie ghost is doing the vocals. Very different stuff here that will appease fans of thrash and old school death metal and black metal.
