John Butler Trio - April Uprising

So this band isn't really my sort of thing, but this is for a friend... so enjoy!

"The John Butler Trio are an Australian folk/roots/rock band, whose freeform jamming style, which absorbs a number of traditional music styles, has built them strong reputation as live performers." -cdnow.com-

"John Butler returns with his first album in three years, April Uprising, on April 6, 2010.

The album finds the multi-platinum Australian artist with a new line up and a new label in the States, ATO Records. Recorded at The Compound, Butler s self-built studio in the heart of his hometown of Fremantle, Western Australia, April Uprising is the followup to 2007 s critically acclaimed and globally successful release, Grand National. This album yielded a number one US Triple A single, 'Better Than,' and rave reviews for its sophisticated mix of guitar stylings, hip hop beats and intelligent, socially conscious lyrics. The release also attracted a global audience and found the former busker-turned-international-recording-and-touring artist appearing at music fests worldwide performing as the John Butler Trio." -cdnow.com-

New Shit! New Shit! New Shit!

So it's been 2 1/2 months into 2010 and some albums of pure awesomeness are already starting to pour in from the kick ass rivers of music. So here's 2 new albums, one just came out and the other is about to come out.

First up we have BLACK BREATH. This band is from Seattle and even though Seattle is known for depression, this band is definitely not depressed... they're fucking ANGRY! Black Breath play a mix of metal, hardcore, thrash, death metal (all old school versions of) in a crusty kinda way. This album is packed with riffs and Black Breath definitely surpassed their previous ep, "Razor To Oblivion" on this one. Solo's going off, circle pit educing riffage, and pissed as hell vocals all combine together to make one hell of a record. So do enjoy... highly recommended. Definitely can't wait to catch these guys at Maryland Death Fest this year.

Black Breath - "Heavy Breathing"

01 - Black Sin (spit on the cross)
02 - Eat The Witch

Lastly, we have Negură Bunget from Romania. Scary band name, scary album cover, scary Romanian language = scary album. This album is awesome black metal done in a unique way... with a lot of different instruments and tons of progressive ideas. Negură Bunget have put out an album that is purely amazing and it definitely delivers. I doubt anyone can walk away from this album not thinking what they just heard was amazing. So enjoy this one, definitely worth a download even if you're not a huge black metal fan. Romanian Progressive Folk-Post-Black Metal? j/k

Nirvana (not the hits)

Nirvana, yeah... they have a bunch of singles on the radio that you've heard a million times. However, they released a b-sides record filled with out takes, rarities, bbc sessions, etc. I always liked this album more than "Nevermind" or "In Utero" or "Bleach" and until recently I didn't know why it clicked until I recently saw "About A Son" the movie that was just still shots and video of Seattle while an interview played. Kurt said he wanted to write sappy pop songs, but with the heaviness of black sabbath. Actually, I think his reference was he wanted to mix The Beatles w/ Black Sabbath. So anyways, this album, I think really captures the sound he was hoping to achieve as opposed to making radio hits and the forced hit writing demands from the record label. This album catches a unique, genuine sound of a band that changed music for a while. So yeah, enough reminiscing. This album is definitely awesome, not a bad track. The 2nd half of the record is really killer. Enjoy!

Nirvana - "Incesticide"
01 - Dive
02 - Sliver
03 - Stain
04 - Been A Son

10 - Downer

13 - Aero Zeppelin
14 - Big Long Now
15 - Aneurysm

Incantation - Infernal Storm

So this is one of the first death metal albums I purchased on my own. I say on my own because most of my friends (actually all) don't really care for Incantation. I on the other hand like Incantation's take on death metal, especially on this album. I like the slow heaviness of it and the vocals are killer, lol. Plus Kyle from Incantation has a mustache (anal cunt reference). Anyways, this is my favorite album of theirs. So check it out if you're into DM, bro. (_|_)>FRRRRT!!!

Incantation - "Infernal Storm"

Cephalic Carnage (the good years)

So Cephalic Carnage ain't what they use to be, but they did put out "Lucid Interval"... this was probably my first grind/death metal albums purchase. Really heavy, loud, chaotic, awesome grindy death metal. These guys smoke a ton of weed and create what they call "Rocky Mountain Hydro Grind". Enjoy their greatest release.

Dax Riggs (acid bath, agents of oblivion, deadboy and the elephantmen)

Cult classic Acid Bath front man, Dax Riggs now makes eerie down south folk rock instead of insane sludge metal? Yeah, it's true... it's like this guy gets further and further away from the heavy. Don't let that fool you though, this record has just as much heart as past bands. Now a soloist, Dax has a distinct voice that echoes throughout this record. Hauntingly beautiful, yeah I know... gay. Enjoy it, I do.

Curlupanddie (not the salon)

Sadly disbanded in 2005, Curlupanddie were probably my favorite band ever. Anyways, it's brootal technical hardcore digital metal with vocals you can't understand and even more complicated lyrics that don't belong in such a vocal styling. The song titles are long and silly and I'm not typing them all. Fuck it, but do check out this solid record produced by none other than Kurt Ballou. Enjoy.

Curlupanddie - "Unfortunately We're Not Robots"

Suicide Note

One of my favorite records of 2002. Kurt Ballou really knows how to make a record kick, too bad he can't do that for Converge's last few releases. However, instead of boring you... this sounds like if Curlupanddie made a rock and roll record. Simple, easy, awesome.

Suicide Note - "You're Not Looking So Good"

01 - Not In A Million Years
02 - Random Hell
03 - Black Cat

Suffocation - Pierced From Within

If you don't know who Suffocation is, then off yourself now. These masters of death metal have paved the way for some of the most br00tal death metal bands today. This is probably my most favorite album of all time and I have a secret boner fantasy that they would tour and play this record in it's entirety like most bands are doing these days with their classic albums. Released in 1995, this record's sounds as if it were released yesterday. Suffocation definitely know what they're doing. Enjoy.

Suffocation "Pierced From Within"

Hardcore Usually Sucks

This is another one of my favorite albums from the past. I usually don't go for simple hardcore bands, but this band takes hardcore to the next level. The riffs on this album are reason enough to download it. It's heavy, it's angry, it's fucking awesome. The Hope Conspiracy, a band that I have yet to see live and would most likely go see if they ever came to town. Anyways, check out this awesome album.

The Hope Conspiracy "Cold Blue"

01 - Fragile
02 - Bled Across The Wire

Political Hardcore Punk Metal!?!?

It seems that I'm posting some old favorites here lately (that pg.99 post). This is another awesome band from Virginia. They play a hardcore punk metal mix that's just great. For a three piece this band is incredibly loud and luckily I was able to catch them live back in '03 before they split up (I think they're split up). Anyways, if you like Pg.99, you'll love these guys even though this band is a little more instrumental at times. Enjoy.

Majority Rule "Interviews With David Frost"

02 - At 3 A.M.
03 - Burial Suit
04 - XOXO
05 - Progress of Elimination

Tombs - Winter Hours

So this is an interesting band, considering they're on Relapse (they've been signing a lot of crap lately). They play a mixture of Black Metal, Doom, Shoe Gaze, Noise, etc. They're what you might call "Post-Black Metal" or whatever... names are silly, but regardless, this record is fucking LOUD! So enjoy this hidden gem that everyone seems to be sleeping on. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing them at this years Maryland Death Fest for sure!

Virginia Is For Lovers

So here is a post of one of my favorite bands, Pageninetynine (pg.99). They're from Sterling, VA and their music can somewhat be described as a mixture of Punk, Hardcore, Spazz, Grind, and Metal. This is my favorite album of theirs, it's "Document #8". I think it's their heaviest material recorded. They recently remastered it and re-released it with 2 bonus tracks that can be found on their split 7" w/ City of Caterpillar (another awesome band) and this is said version. Enjoy.
